Photo: Bernard Troncale Water whys Alabama lakes are breathtakingly beautiful. Anyone who has ever spent time out on the water can tell you that. However, as pretty as our lakes are, Conrad Reed might have the best view of them. Alabama Power's senior real estate specialist at Weiss Lake buys, restores and flies vintage planes. All told, he's tinkered with eight planes, including several models used in World War II, Korea and Vietnam. He says he doesn't fly enough – just when he "can sneak off " — for two or three times a month over Weiss Lake and into Georgia. Writer Alec Harvey and photographer Bernard Troncale took to the skies with Reed to talk about his high-flying hobby. While Reed enjoys a birds-eye view of Weiss Lake, a group of Logan Martin homeowners teamed up with Alabama Power to preserve their lake from the ground up. ey came together to save from erosion a landmark the locals call School Bus Island. anks to their efforts, future generations will be able to enjoy the island. In this issue, cookbook author and food blogger Stacey Little shares some tried-and-true recipes for tailgating at the lake. We also unveil the new version of our Shorelines app for smartphones. Called Smart Lakes, the updated app offers new interactive features designed to enhance the lake experience. Finally, we explore improvements being made at urlow Dam and business innovation on Lake Martin. Enjoy! — Justin Averette 3 www.apcshorelines.com
