CONTENTS SALUTING VETERANS Before working at Alabama Power, retiree Ken Menk served during World War II; retiree Kenneth Teal served during WWII, the Korean War and the Cuban Conflict; Field Service Representative Broderick Smith served in Operation Enduring Freedom; and Lead Operations Lineman Chris Coger did two tours in Iraq. On Veterans Day and throughout the year, we salute the men and women who have fought for our freedom. Page 1 HONORS It's not unusual for Alabama Power employees to win awards from or hold prominent positions in the Southeastern Electric Exchange, which is one of the nation's key organizations for establishing industry safety standards. Page 9 APSO Santa is known for his Christmas deliveries but for many children across the state each Dec. 25, the toys and clothes under the tree are the culmination of efforts by caring members of the Alabama Power Service Organization. Page 11 COMMUNITY Children's of Alabama is known for geing patients back on their feet, and the hospital gets a helping hand each year from people like Prissy Daly. For nearly 40 years, she's helped decorate Christmas trees to raise money for the Birmingham hospital and its children. Page 15 ENERGIZERS Carolyn Feltus volunteered for many causes during 29 years on the job. Lile has changed since she retired, as Feltus continues making a mark on the Mobile community and beyond. Page 19 HYDRO A worn-out turbine shut down hydro generation at Bankhead Lock and Dam in 2015. Now, a $17 million project is bringing in a new turbine and other upgrades that should keep spinning for many decades. Page 21 HEALTH Early onset Alzheimer's has changed the world of Menzella Kiser and her husband, Greg, who was diagnosed with the disease five years ago. She is a leading fundraiser in efforts to find a cure. Page 25 OUR TOWN To many Americans, Leeds is the hometown of television sports analyst and former basketball star Charles Barkley. However, visitors quickly learn that the town near Birmingham has much more going for it than the Round Mound of Rebound. Page 27 OUR TOWN SIDEBAR The Barber Motorsports Park and Museum is the dream of a car racing champ who sold the family dairy business to spend more time bringing the best racing facilities possible to his hometown. The Guinness Book of World Records, among others, says George Barber has succeeded. Page 35 EDUCATION Remembering how she and her sister felt going to school without the kind of clothes other kids wore, Jackie Lee began a drive to outfit needy students in Atmore. Page 39 HAPPY TRAILS Steve and Pai Knain met at Alabama Power, dated, married and then retired together aer working a combined 83 years at Corporate Headquarters.
