CONTENTS SALUTING VETERANS We salute Alabama Power employees and retirees who fought for freedom around the world: the late Bill Daughtry was a World War II veteran; Accounting Services Manager Edna Felton fought in the Gulf War; and Greene County Steam Plant Security Team Leader Paul Taylor's military career spanned three decades. Page 1 EDUCATION Alabama Power, the Alabama Power Foundation and many employees are leading efforts to commemorate the state's bicentennial. The company has a legacy of educational support going back more than a century. Page 9 APSO Each year, members of the Alabama Power Service Organization raise money and volunteer their time to help the less fortunate citizens of Alabama. Christmas is an especially important time for the nonprofit group, with gis and meals being delivered statewide. Page 13 ENERGIZERS Becky York has been a leader of the Energizers retiree group in Western Division for many years. In 2020, she becomes the first female state president in the history of the 1,500-member volunteer nonprofit. Page 15 ENERGIZERS Aer 14 years as state president of the Energizers, Bob O'Daniel has decided to devote more time to his family, church and community. While he's stepping down as the top leader, he's remaining an Energizers adviser. Page 17 CULTURE The relationship between Alabama Power and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers is considered the gold standard nationally, as they work for continuous improvement in safety and training for employees. Page 19 ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT Vice President of Marketing and Economic Development Patrick Murphy did double duty this past year, working at Alabama Power while serving as president of the Economic Development Association of Alabama. Page 21 PROFILE By day, Ryan Brown works in the Corporate Records Center. At night, he creates colorful cartoon strips. His pastime recently took another step with publication of the children's book "Petey and the Pack Presents …" Page 23 OUR TOWN The gold-domed Fayee County Courthouse tower is the familiar face of Fayee, where a century ago a new downtown began rising from the ashes of a fire that destroyed 56 businesses and the previous courthouse. Today, the quaint town is known for its artistry and homemade products. Page 27 OUR TOWN SIDEBAR Ox Bodies of Fayee has grown from a small, dirt- floor shop to become one of the nation's most prestigious builders of dump bodies for trucks that haul industrial loads. The plant employs about 200 workers on a 10-acre facility at the edge of town. Page 37 COMMUNITY The Alabama Business Charitable Trust delivers millions of dollars in grants each year to help the needy pay energy bills, for energy efficiency building improvements and educational opportunities provided to low-income families and nonprofits. The Alabama Adult and Teen Challenge Women's Training Center is one beneficiary. Page 41 HAPPY TRAILS Angie Fortner blazed trails for 40 years as an Alabama Power employee. In retirement, the former Eastern Division Office budget analyst is staying busy making award-winning quilts. Page 42 RETIREES Page 45 IN MEMORIAM Page 47 THUMBS UP!
