Contents PANDEMIC Since the COVID-19 crisis led on March 13 to a declaration of a national emergency in the U.S., Alabama Power and its employees have maintained safe operations while continuously serving customers and communities. Page 1 HISTORY During the centennial of Powergrams, we continue to look back at covers from decades past. This time the feature shot is from March 1955. Page 3 COMMUNITY The workday doesn't end when all Alabama Power employees clock out from their business locations. Some of them are on standby to go back to work fi ghting fi res in their small communities. Page 4 EDUCATION Twenty-two high school graduates have been honored by the Alabama Power Foundation with scholarships to a end college, trade or technical schools in the state. The recipients are the children of active, retired or deceased employees. Page 8 EDUCATION Brooks Weeks is the winner of the Alabama Power Foundation's four-year Presidential Scholarship. He is a graduate of Eufaula High School and will pursue his higher education at Troy State University. Page 10 EDUCATION Alexandria Driver is the winner of the Alabama Power Foundation's two-year Presidential Scholarship. She is a graduate of Dora High School and will pursue her higher education at Wallace State Community College. Page 12 EDUCATION Teachers across Alabama are using grants of up to $1,000 to buy materials and supplies to improve their classrooms and enhance their students' ability to learn. The Alabama Power Foundation's fi rst-ever classroom grants went to 130 teachers in 104 schools. Page 14 SAFETY The long-popular and important Safe-T-Opolis campaign for fourth grade students in Alabama is expanding in 2020 with Power Play. The new fast-paced safety video game is the latest eff ort of Alabama Power Public Safety. Page 16 ENERGIZERS Retiree Marvin Salter is helping the Southern Division Chapter of Energizers stay connected during the COVID-19 pandemic, pu ing his old job skills into action for his fellow volunteers. Page 19 PROFILE The Distinguished Young Women contest has had a home in Mobile for more than 60 years, owing much of its success to local volunteers like Beth Thomas. She continues lending her leadership and organizational skills to the group and young female honorees. Page 20 APSO Members of the Alabama Power Service Organization have a new tool in their kit for ge ing involved in their communities: the APSO App. It is available free online. Page 22 RECREATION A century ago a prestigious architect fi rm developed a landscape for Jeff erson County. Birmingham now has a network of trails in part based on that plan that is boosting communities and the economy. Page 23 COMMUNITY Alabama Power and its employees are playing a key role in supporting Census 2020 and encouraging Alabamians to complete the important survey. Page 26 PROFILE Alabama Power Lineman Jake Li le has wri en the fi rst in what he hopes will be a series of fi ction books based on an American hero fi ghting terrorists.
