The awards, which were presented online on Friday, May 22, recognize students based on character and citizenship. The Magic City Chapter is partnering with Customer Service to read stories to students at Barre Elementary School in Birmingham. Employees are recording themselves reading books for posting on Barre 's Facebook page. Customer Service Center employees also volunteered with the Birmingham Education Foundation to talk with families about their health and educational needs during the pandemic. Mobile Division APSO has been involved in various projects during the business offi ce shutdowns. Volunteers have been sewing isolation gowns for staff at the Li le Sisters of the Poor assisted living facility. They donated 30 coloring books with crayons to USA Children's and Women's Hospital, and sent video messages to Mulherin Home residents and staff at the William F. Green State Veterans Home. In addition, APSO members sent 100 greeting cards to Infi rmary Health, University Hospital, Providence Hospital, Crown Health Care and Thomasville Nursing Home. Erica Wells, staff Accounting assistant and Mobile APSO member, is sewing bu ons on headbands for health care workers. They can a ach their face masks to the headbands to make them more comfortable. Khanh Bailey, Mobile Division market specialist and another APSO volunteer, collected 21,000 gloves from businesses in the Mobile area and donated them to D.W. Memorial Hospital in Brewton and the Mostellar Clinic in Bayou La Batre. A Talladega customer who lost power during an April storm called Customer Service to show her appreciation when service was quickly restored, saying the Alabama Power linemen "did a great job."
