Donna Cope won the Award of Excellence for her Powergrams story about Western Division employees helping a family get a new home. Carla Davis was presented the Award of Excellence for her Alabama NewsCenter story about a doctor who beat COVID-19 and continued treating patients. Just in time for Thanksgiving, Gaston APSO members donated 1,320 pounds of food to Build a Bridge Community Pantry in Vincent. Brandy Wallis, director of operations of the Revival Center's pantry, said in December that the organization served more than 11,000 people in the nearby four counties since it opened in April 2020. Plant Gaston employees gave canned vegetables and fruits, rice, dried goods and boxed foods, such as macaroni and cheese, potatoes and pancake mix. "They came and gave a very generous donation, the needs are extremely great at this time," said Wallis, who received the Nov. 23 food delivery by Gaston APSO interim president Jodi Webb and Tabetha Lemonds. The pantry shelves were mostly bare when the Gaston members arrived. "We actually were able to feed 332 people for the holiday with the donation given by Gaston APSO," said Wallis. "Without APSO, that couldn't have happened. Every lile bit makes a tremendous difference. These people genuinely need the support; there are parents that are working who can't afford to feed their children." COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONS OPEN The Alabama Power Foundation will award 22 academic scholarships to children of Alabama Power employees and retirees. Scholarship applications open Jan. 23 and close March 13. Scholarships are awarded through a competitive process administered by Scholarship America. Twenty, four-year renewable scholarships will be awarded, as well as two Presidential Scholarships, one for vocational school and one for a public four-year college in Alabama.
