LEARNING THE ROPES For more than a century, Alabama Power has been dedicated to the service of the state, providing safe, clean, reliable, affordable energy and supporting Alabama communities. For our employees, how we do our work is just as important as what we do. Having a firm foundation in Our Values guides our behaviors each day to ensure we keep our customers at the center of everything we do. For new employees, it is important not only to learn the details of the job, but to become students of the business by gaining an understanding of Our Values, how our company operates and our commitment to elevating the state. The New Employee Forum is an introduction to our company and the culture that makes it great. This year, 250 new employees from Alabama Power and Alabama-based Southern Company Services attended the February event. Alabama Power CEO Mark Crosswhite and Southern Company Executive Vice President of Operations Stan Connally opened the forum by discussing company values and their significance. Throughout the day, company leaders provided insights on specific areas of the business, including Accounting, Finance and Treasury, Corporate and Administrative Services, Customer and Employee Services, External Affairs, Generation, Power Delivery, and legal and compliance. "Our employees are the real face of the company, so it's important that everyone understands our business and knows what's going on in our industry," said Crosswhite. "I'm honored to be on a team with so many dedicated people." Employees had an opportunity to visit more than 20 booths featuring information and resources, including Safety and Critical Risk Management, the Outage Alerts program, Corporate Services, American Association of Blacks in Energy, Greener State, the Alabama Power Service Organization, Alabama NewsCenter and Renew Our Rivers. Booths about company operations such as Generation and Power Delivery provided interactive experiences to help new employees better understand the energy industry and how the company is evolving to meet customer needs. Afternoon breakout sessions delved into even greater detail with information that covered ways the company makes, moves and sells electricity, as well as how employees can maximize their career and benefits. "I think it's great that our leadership takes the time to host events like this," said Safety & Health Coordinator Brittany Durfeld. "It shows that they value employees and their contributions to the company. I learned a lot from the booths and breakout sessions, too." Continuing to provide employees tools and opportunities for professional development is one way we're committed to ensuring a workplace environment where everyone is valued.
