OUR SHARED RESPONSIBILITY In 2020, the nation had to address the social injustice and systemic racism that has long resulted in the deaths and disenfranchisement of Black Americans. George Floyd 's May 25 death while in Minneapolis Police custody set off demonstrations across the country calling for racial justice and police reform. Alabama Power quickly took a stand against racism and all forms of discrimination, reaffirming its commitment to inclusion. Leaders from the business community, government organizations and educational systems all began a dialogue about the recent tragedies and their personal and professional responsibilities to foster more inclusive cultures. CAN DID CONVE RSATIONS In June and July, the CCI provided a framework for focused listening, and more than 560 employees weighed in on current events, assessed company culture and offered input on advancing inclusion in the workplace. Their input helped shape Alabama Power's action plan. Some of the major themes that were identified included: Many employees say Alabama Power is doing well, but racism still exists. • Employees want to participate in the conversation, but some are fearful of speaking out. • Internal programs set an example for the community. • Employees want leadership to address internal issues and be transparent. • Employees want diversity and inclusion education and training. • Employees say now is the time to act. S O C I A L E Q U I T Y Racism, discrimination and intolerance are unacceptable. We are committed to the necessary hard work of dealing openly and honestly with the factors that have brought us here so that we may move forward together – communities, businesses and individuals alike – to a place of fairness, equity and acceptance to create a brighter future for all people. 2 2
