Thumbs Up! 36 Tiffany Esco, Trussville Crew Headquarters, received Alabama Power's Spark Top Contributor 2020 Innovation Award for being a leading participant in the program. She submied three COVID-19-related ideas, including the adoption of "Swipe and Go" iPad payments; drive-thru payment booths; and "Light the Way to Safety," the use of infrared/UVC light in air- conditioning ducts to fight coronavirus germs. Esco suggested making "automated customer response information" available to customers who call Alabama Power or check the website during power outages. Bobby Madison, Metro Central Office, recently graduated from Leadership Shelby County. At age 78, Vivian Cunningham, retired mail processing assistant, graduated from Samford University with a bachelor's degree in liberal studies. She began her journey years earlier, earning course credits from Birmingham colleges, with the help of Alabama Power's tuition reimbursement program. She continued her educational journey aer retiring in 1992 and received an associate degree in paralegal studies from Virginia College. "I am just overwhelmed and elated," said Cunningham of her recent Samford degree. "I didn't know I would make it sometimes, but I still stuck with it and kept on going. I always said I was not going to stop until I got my bachelor's degree. I love learning and geing knowledge." Cunningham said she may go for her master's degree. Alabama Power Public Relations won 11 Hermes Creative Awards for 2021. Platinum winners included Shorelines magazine and the Alabama NewsCenter story "Building Up Birmingham changing families' lives one home at a time" by Bob Blalock. The department won five Golds and three Honorable Mentions. Hermes is an international competition for creative professionals involved in the concept, writing and design of traditional and emerging media. Judges are industry professionals who look for companies and individuals whose talent exceeds a high standard of excellence and whose work serves as a benchmark for the industry.
