Thumbs Up! Thirteen volunteers from the Magic City Chapter of the Alabama Power Service Organization (APSO) recently raised $20,000 for Habitat for Humanity, working at the fifth annual Barbecue for Building competition at the Habitat ReStore in Irondale. Members worked more than 50 hours, said Carla Scarborough, serving as judges, distributing drinks, helping with parking and manning entrances to the event. APSO's donation helped build a Habitat house for Tanganyika Johnson and her 9-year-old son, Jay, whose Hueytown home was completed May 31. The Alabama Power Foundation awarded a $10,000 grant to the Easter Seals Central Alabama Canine Program to assist disabled people statewide. Montgomery Business Office Manager Noah Rocker and Customer Service Representative Brittany Clayton delivered the contribution to Frances McGowin. The grant will help purchase a service dog for an Easter Clayton, Rocker with Easter Seals' client Seals representatives. who has an extreme medical condition. Each dog is trained to serve the specific needs of a client in the program. Joining Clayton, Rocker and McGowin at the check presentation were Cristie Delavega and her child protection dog Bob; Matt Watters and his diabetic alert dog, Piper; and Ben Brewbaker with his service dog, Princess. Power Delivery South-Anniston has worked one year without a recordable injury, earning the Target Zero Silver Award. This recognition goes to large work groups that complete 365 days without a recordable injury. Transmission Substation Construction Crew 9 has achieved an important safety victory – no recordable injuries and or preventable vehicle accidents for two consecutive years. Ashville customer Harold Delashmit sent an email to Alabama Power commending the Gadsden line crew for their "professional" demeanor in moving a power pole at his new home. "At no time did I hear these men say anything that was unprofessional," Delashmit wrote. "I was concerned that my new yard and flower bed would be messed up by the moving of this power pole. They did an excellent job. My yard and flower bed were not disturbed. My family and I are thankful for the great job they did." The crew members who performed the work were Matthew Johnson, Brad Sanders, Jose Perez and Sam Tarvin. Eastern Division employees reached a milestone, while at the same time educating the children in their community about the importance of being safe around power lines. The employees achieved their goal of presenting Safe-T-Opolis at all of the schools in Eastern Division during the 2012-2013 school year.
