Thumbs Up! 36 The nine statewide chapters of the Alabama Power Service Organization (APSO) by August had logged more than 5,000 hours supporting worthy causes in 2021 despite the pandemic, which has limited face-to-face volunteering. Instead, volunteers have provided support to schools and nonprofits virtually or while maintaining social distancing. Members of Executive Women International (EWI) held a backpack drive supporting children at the Boys & Girls Club of Central Alabama. Through assistance from Alabama Power, its employees and partner organizations, the group donated more than 150 supplies and backpacks to children to start the school year. Each backpack included items based on a child's age and grade level. "We were thrilled to have such a successful event," said Lindsey Tillman, director of the Boys & Girls Club of Central Alabama. "Our parents had one less thing to worry about as they prepared their children for school." In addition to stuffing backpacks, volunteers took time to read a book to 6- and 7-year-olds to emphasize the importance of literacy and reading. Mobile Division APSO members volunteered at a baseball camp hosted by Cleon Jones, former New York Mets All-Star and World Series champion who grew up in Africatown. APSO volunteers directed youths and parents participating in the event to the clubhouse at Hank Aaron Stadium in Mobile. There, Jones and other speakers talked to the youths about attitude, leadership and ways to channel their energy and "dream big." Southeast/Farley APSO donated more than 60 coloring books and word-search books to Crown Health Care nursing home. Karen Deal and Brooke Goff, both of Southeast Division, delivered the books to residents and staff members. Cleon Jones, one of the 1969 "Miracle Mets," talked to young camp attendees. Crown Health Care residents enjoyed reading donated books.
