Thumbs Up! 29 Alabama Power Media Relations won the Platinum Award for Strategic Communications in the 2021 MarCom international competition. Alabama NewsCenter also took the Platinum for Writing. Additionally, Gold Award winners included Shorelines magazine; the Alabama Power Nuclear Emergency Communication Organization for Strategic Communications; Alabama NewsCenter for Digital Media Design; and ANC writer Anthony Cook for "Alabama principal's viral music video Hammers home COVID-19 guidelines." Honorable mention was awarded for ANC videos about the red- cockaded woodpecker and Mobile Bay's smart growth community, as well as a news story about Build UP Birmingham and an Alabama Music Maker profile of Belinda George Peoples. APSO and the Alabama Power Employee Value Team partnered in a drive to collect canned goods and nonperishable items for area food banks. Prattville APSO donated 350 pounds of food to the Autauga Interfaith Care Center. The South Customer Service Center gave 20 pounds to the Montgomery Area Food Bank. The Oak Grove Office delivered 35 pounds to Build-A- Bridge Community Pantry housed at the Vincent Revival Center and 40 pounds to Alabama Childhood Food Solutions in Sylacauga. Loaves and Fishes Ministry received about 100 pounds of food from Dadeville Office employees. Eastern Division Community Relations Manager Steve Marlowe was named the 2021 Sylacauga Citizen of the Year by the Sylacauga Beautification Council. The prestigious annual award is for "outstanding service to the city and community through unselfish leadership … enhancing the quality of life." Marlowe is president of the Sylacauga City School Board, president of the Rotary Club, board member of the Chamber of Commerce and East AlabamaWorks, and in his spare time a Southeastern Conference football referee. Trussville Engineering Supervisor Miles Hoyle and Local Operations Lineman Brett Page took part in Community Helper Week at First Baptist Church Trussville's Wee Center. They talked to preschool children about their Alabama Power role in the community. Police and fire department personnel take part in the annual effort in which Page has been involved for eight years. Western Division leaders partnered with the local APSO chapter to recognize employees who have served in the military. APSO members placed "thank you" signs at several offices, as well as flags representing each employee. Lunches were provided at the Tuscaloosa and Jasper offices on Tuesday and Wednesday before Veterans Day. The division leaders joined with APSO members in serving lunch and spending time with the group of veterans COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONS OPEN JAN. 5-FEB. 18 The Alabama Power Foundation will award 22 academic scholarships to children of Alabama Power employees and retirees. Scholarship applications open Jan. 5 and close Feb. 18. Scholarships are awarded through a competitive process administered by Scholarship America. Twenty, four-year renewable scholarships will be awarded, as well as two Presidential Scholarships, one for a vocational school and one for a public four-year college in Alabama.
