Thumbs Up! 29 Members of the Southeast/Farley Chapter of the Alabama Power Service Organization (APSO) served lunch at the 14th annual Wiregrass area Buddy Walk in Dothan on March 19. The event at the National Peanut Festival Fairgrounds was sponsored by F.R.I.E.N.D.S. (Families Reaching, Influencing, Educating and Networking for Down syndrome), which provides support and education for families, friends and caregivers. APSO volunteers served pizza, chips and oatmeal pies. More than 20 volunteers took part in the project, chaired by Heather Mims, Headland Office/Crew Headquarters. Steve Marlowe, Eastern Division community relations manager, was named Sylacauga Citizen of the Year for 2021 by the Sylacauga Beautification Council. The award recognizes people for outstanding service to the Sylacauga community through unselfish leadership, deeds and caring that enhance quality of life. Marlowe has been on the Sylacauga City Schools board for 15 years and is president this year. With his help, the city and several nonprofits have received grants from the Alabama Power Foundation, which have been used to install three welcome signs and for beautification projects. Dana McFarland, Eastern Division Office, spearheaded a special service project to say "thanks" to local front- line health care workers on Valentine's Day. Eastern Division APSO volunteers delivered Mason jars filled with candy, inspirational notepads, hangtag clips, lotion, chips and pens shaped like syringes to 85 nurses and doctors who work in the COVID-19 units at Regional Medical Center and Stringfellow Memorial Hospital in Anniston. Members who helped with the event included McFarland, Helen Dean, Latoya Zachery, Stephanie Mitchell, Dan Patten and Katie Glenn. Eastern APSO members prepare Valentine's Day care packages.
