Thumbs Up! The Eastern Division Chapter of the Alabama Power Service Organization (APSO) took part in Anniston High School's Financial Literacy program on Feb. 9. The 4-H program hosted a simulation, where seniors visited booths to get real-life experiences, such as purchasing a home, vehicles, groceries and choosing child care for their families. APSO volunteers worked at various stations, and gave the students advice on how to spend their money wisely and make sound decisions. Tamar Towns, the career coach for Anniston City Schools, said the students "really enjoyed" the simulation and added that it was an "eye-opening" and "great experience for them to have now so they will be prepared to transition to the adult world." The Southwest Mobile County Chamber of Commerce has selected Mobile Division Community Relations Manager Sharon Murrill as its Citizen of the Year. The award is presented to a person in the community "who has gone beyond the call of duty, gives 100% and more, exceeds all obstacles and continues to give a helping hand to others." On Feb. 22, United Way of the Chattahoochee Valley showed its appreciation to Phenix City Crew Headquarters employees for completing their campaign, with a special "thank you" parade. United Way staffers drove by the crew headquarters, displaying "thank-you" signs and waving as employees headed out into the field for the day. These employees raised $20,492 for United Way, surpassing their $17,500 goal. "The United Way of Chattahoochee Valley aims to advance equity, and achieve child, family and community well-being. Together with local volunteers and community partners, like Alabama Power, we help everyone in our region feel safe, secure and supported," said Haley Ramey, United Way development director. "Alabama Power is a huge supporter of United Way and always leads a great campaign. We appreciate you and everything you do!"
