ALABAMA POWER CHARITABLE GIVING GRANTS Alabama Power Foundation Alabama Business Charitable Trust Fund Grants of more than $50,000: 15 grants totaling $2.06 million Grants between $10,000 and $50,000: 21 grants totaling $436,500 Grants of $10,000 or less: 22 grants totaling $220,000 Total for 2013 (through mid-August): 58 grants for $2,716,500. Other foundation grants in 2013 Good Roots: 24 grants totaling $21,619 Gateway: 17 grants totaling $35,750 In 2012, the Trust provided more than $683,035 to help more than 2,800 families pay their energy bills. ALABAMA POWER CHARITABLE GIVING PROGRAMS The Alabama Power Foundation, created in 1989 with an investment by shareholders, awards more than 1,300 grants every year. Since its inception, the foundation has given more than $140 million in non-ratepayer dollars through more than 20,000 grants and scholarships. FOUNDATION GRANTS: • Grant requests of $50,000 or more must be approved by the full board. • Midsize grants from $10,000 to $50,000 are approved by board subcommittees. These subcommittees meet four times a year, usually between full board meetings. • Grant requests of $10,000 or less are recommended by division vice presidents: Mike Saxon in Mobile, Richard Hutto in Southeast, Julia Segars in Eastern, Leslie Sanders in Southern, Mark Crews in Western and Bobbie Knight in Birmingham. The grants of $10,000 or less are ratified during meetings of the full board. THE FOUNDATION ALSO HAS SEVERAL IN-HOUSE GRANT PROGRAMS: • Good Roots grants provide $1,000 per grant to purchase trees for planting in cities, towns and communities and by nonprofit organizations across the state. • Gateway grants supply up to $2,000 per grant to purchase materials for signage to greet visitors to cities, towns and communities. The Alabama Business Charitable (ABC) Trust Fund was established in 1992 by Alabama Power Company shareholders. It is a 501(c)(4) organization that provides energy assistance funding to community action agencies and other social service agencies to help clients pay their energy bills. The Trust covers 60 of Alabama's 67 counties and has provided more than $38 million in energy assistance to more than 100,000 households since its inception. The Alabama Power Service Organization (APSO) is a nonprofit organization that through volunteerism works to improve communities across Alabama Power's service territory. APSO includes more than 5,000 Alabama Power, Southern Nuclear, SouthernLINC and Southern Company Services employees and their families who volunteer. APSO members from 10 chapters across the state typically contribute more than 50,000 volunteer hours each year. The Energizers is a nonprofit organization of Alabama Power and Southern Company retirees and spouses who volunteer in their communities. Energizers has about 1,200 members in 11 chapters across Alabama Power's service territory.
