Teaming energy savings with saving lives is a mission Alabama Power embraces with expertise and caring. Nowhere is this formula more successful than at the new $400 million Benjamin Russell Hospital for Children in Birmingham, which opened in August 2012. R E L I A B I L I T Y Finding Solutions for Businesses Statewide 5 The new campus is expected to serve some 670,000 outpatient and 14,000 inpatient children from every county of Alabama, 44 states and four foreign countries this year alone. Everything must run perfectly — and Alabama Power's close relationship with the hospital assures just that. For 12 years, account manager Al Williams has advised the hospital on matters of billing, service and upgrades. Like Williams, Alabama Power account managers around the state work closely with customers to promote energy efficiency and lower costs. They strive to create the most efficient price and performance scenario to meet the customer's needs and budget. In this case, Alabama Power's expertise enabled a great leap in technology and savings at Children's. The new heat recovery chiller, an energy-efficient innovation in electro-technology, is designed not only to provide 800 tons of cooling but also the hot water essential to the hospital's operation. "The new chiller, which is located in Children's central energy plant, is the largest of its kind in Alabama," explains Williams, who served on the team promoting the technology. "There are really very few like it in the country." Energy innovation may help the 2-million-square-foot hospital (third largest pediatric care facility in the U.S.) gain Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification. The designation is awarded to sites utilizing green building methods that save energy and preserve natural resources.
