Only it doesn't feel like work at all, thanks to committed teachers and trained volun- teers (many of them from Alabama Power Company, a generous supporter of the program through the Alabama Power Foundation). Super Citizen kicked off in more than 200 schools last year, including 32 directly funded by the foundation grant. Even more schools will introduce the program to their students in 2014. "is program is life- changing," reports Sam Covert, area manager in Alabama Power's Mobile Division, who taught a unit on the American flag to third-graders. "It's all about patriotism and these kids are little sponges. e heart of this program is that everybody is called to be a great American citizen. And once they get it, they've got it. You can see it in their faces." e program is ambitious, filled with interactive materials ranging from important chunks of history (why are we a country?) to journal-keeping (how do you feel about being an American?) to math and finance (what's the cost of the Statue of Liberty in today's currency?). e Liberty Learning Foundation, which created and nurtures the Super Citizen initiative, expertly weaves in tenets of character development, career consid- erations and financial responsibility. Super Citizen curricu- lum kits (provided through foundation grants) excite and educate. It's all the brainchild of Huntsvillians like Patti Yancey, chief financial officer of AlaTrade Foods, who simply saw a need. "We looked at what's missing in the classroom," she says. "Everybody's about math, science and technology, and the things I grew up with have gone out the door. Civics was missing. In fact, 58 percent of college freshmen fail basic question exams on citizenship. e program doesn't have a political agenda. Everything the Statue of Liberty and America stand for should be something you want, regardless of your religion or politics." If this idea of infusing youths with American values is enough to make you proud, just add on the last component of the Super Citizen program.
