Top students receive foundation scholarships The Alabama Power Foundation has awarded scholarships to 21 students to attend college, trade or technical school. This is the 23rd consecutive year of the scholarship program. "This award recognizes the hard work, dedication and commitment these students have shown in both the classroom and the community," said Alabama Power President and CEO Mark Crosswhite. "It is a rare honor, meant to reward their rare leadership qualities." The $2,500 scholarships are awarded to dependent children of active, retired or deceased Alabama Power employees. Winners are selected based on academic achievement, extracurricular and community activities, leadership qualities and other factors by independent vendor Scholarship Management Services, a division of Scholarship America. The award is renewable for the number of years normally required to complete an undergraduate degree program, provided the grant winner makes satisfactory academic progress. One Presidential Scholarship is awarded annually, which pays four years of tuition to a state college or university. The 2014 Scholar is Kyle K. Phillips, son of Mobile Local Operations Lineman Kenneth Phillips. Kyle, a graduate of Baldwin County High School, will attend the University of Alabama in the fall. Since 1991, the Alabama Power Foundation has awarded more than $4 million in scholarships, helping about 1,000 students pursue their higher education. "We are proud to assist these outstanding students as they continue their studies and build a strong foundation for their future and our state," said John Hudson, president of the Alabama Power Foundation.
