About 25 Eastern Division Alabama Power Service Organization (APSO) volunteers are working with students at Anniston Middle School as part of the Class Act program. APSO members volunteer in two classrooms throughout the school year. Implemented in 2004, Class Act is a character education program in which volunteers from businesses, civic and community groups facilitate 45-minute sessions each Tuesday for the school's 489 students. Emphasis is placed on common values such as respect, honesty, fairness, compassion, responsibility, civility, courage and kindness. Metro South Office employees and Varnon's engineers are volunteer readers at Thompson Intermediate School as part of Liberty Learning Foundation's Super Citizen program. The program is presented to 500 fifth-graders and focuses on teaching citizenship, character and financial responsibility. Volunteers include Enchantra Spencer, Angel Pounds, Rachel Boyd, Chris Johnson, Terri Tucker, Teri Strickland, Melissa Holmes, Misty Justice-Chand and Tim Bowen. Pat Coleman, Corporate Headquarters, and Don Chancy, Auburn, presented a tutorial on Power Quality and Metering at the Distribution Apparatus School and Conference in Auburn for 60 professionals from throughout the utility industry. A Berry customer sent a note thanking Joe Shuffield, Fayette Power Delivery Headquarters, and the Fayette line crew for their excellent customer service. The customer wrote, "We do live in a blessed community." On Sept. 26, Gadsden Alabama Power Service Organization (APSO) volunteers took part in their second annual Habitat for Humanity blitz build. The 25 volunteers framed the home and installed the decking on the roof. Jerry Mills, Gadsden Office, coordinated the project, implemented in partnership with Bobby Welch Construction.
