Target Zero Heroes The Southern Transmission Maintenance Center Substation crew won the Superstar Award for working four years without a recordable injury or preventable vehicle accident. On Oct. 21, Western Division Alabama Power Service Organization (APSO) members worked at Oak Hill School to build a pond in one day. APSO volunteers moved stones, plants and other materials, and then dug the pond, which the students will use for educational purposes. On Nov. 1, Alabama Power sponsored the Central Alabama BEST (Boosting Engineering, Science and Technology) competition at the Talladega Superspeedway. The competition was the culmination of a six-week workforce development program. Teams from 20 schools built and designed a functioning robot using PVC pipe, plywood, piano wire, an assortment of screws, aluminum paint and other items before putting their creations to the test. Employees mentored the teams and served as judges for the competition, the student marketing presentations and engineering notebooks. The Customer Service Civic Team held a sock drive benefiting the Fire House Shelter for men in Birmingham. Employees from the Customer Service Centers-North and South donated socks and about $147 in support of the cause. The civic team delivered 148 pairs of socks to the shelter on Oct. 24.
