TARGET ZERO Alabama Power employees have an opportunity to bolster their role as their brothers' and sisters' keepers and boost their own pocketbooks through the SO Safe challenge. Similar to last year's SO Prize competition that brought innovative energy concepts from across the Southern Company system, SO Safe seeks to have employees critically assess everyday tasks and surroundings and think of ways to make them safer. This could be achieved by implementing a new technology, updating a process or finding a different way of doing things. With the launch of Target Zero at Alabama Power and its subsequent systemwide adoption, there has been a steady improvement in safety performance. Target Zero brought a shift in the safety culture that has proven employees can always make their work and home environment safer. SO Safe is the next step in that evolution. "We've come a long way in making our company a safer place to work," said President, Chairman and CEO Mark Crosswhite. "SO Safe is one more opportunity for you to make a difference. I hope you'll consider participating with your ideas, comments and votes." SO Safe enables employees or teams to submit ideas – and vote and comment on the ideas of others – through a Web portal, similar to the one used for SO Prize. When lending support to an idea through votes and comments, employees will be asked to consider the feasibility, impact and innovativeness of the idea. In addition to the SO Safe Web page, a mobile app enables employees to submit, comment and vote on the go. Employees who don't have regular computer access can submit ideas by proxy, such as a SO Safe advocate, supervisor, administrative assistant or co-worker. Ideas may be submitted between May 4 and June 1. Through SO Safe, cash prizes will be awarded to employees and/or teams that propose the best ideas to reach this goal. Employees who do not submit an idea may join a team that does, or offer comments through the SO Safe Web portal. Employee votes will help determine the five winning ideas, each of which – whether submitted by a team or an individual – will receive $10,000. The full details of SO Safe, including answers to frequently asked questions, can be found at sotoday/sosafe/.
