Members of the Alabama Power Service Organization (APSO)-Mobile Division Chapter worked at Wilmer Hall Children's Home as part of United Way of Southwest Alabama's 21st annual Day of Caring. Volunteers helped with painting, landscaping and preparing the annual Pancake Breakfast fundraiser. The event raised more than $16,000 for the state's oldest children's home. Weiss Lake resident John Kinsmow sent an appreciation note to Corporate Real Estate Land Supervisor Sheila Smith for her assistance with his property. Kinsmow wrote, "Thank you for your time and assistance with my seawall issue." Gadsden Steam Plant retiree Gary Reeves' wife, Carolyn, wrote to express her gratitude to Brenda Blanton and Selina Lee, of the Anniston Office, for their help and guidance following the recent death of her husband. "There was so much to do, and I was very anxious about getting it all done and done correctly, especially the matters with Alabama Power," she wrote. "These ladies were always willing to listen, assure me and help me with anything. They were there for me anytime I called them to help me along and guide me during the saddest and hardest time in my life. I will never forget their great compassion and concern. They are both great assets to an already wonderful company." West Jefferson employees took part in the Hueytown Relay for Life, raising more than $1,200 for the American Cancer Society through a soup and chili lunch, a pancake breakfast and online donations. The team set up and decorated a tent where they sold Chick-fil-A sandwiches. West Jefferson Customer Service Representative Brad Hamilton entertained the crowd with music. Employees who headed the efforts were team leader Shenita Baker, Fatimah Morris, Kayshia Featherstone, Robbie Oliver, John Sides, Brad Hamilton and Linesha Foster. Phenix City Office employees raised nearly $3,250 for the American Cancer Society through donations from friends, family and customers, and by selling popcorn, cookies and brownies. Employees paid $5 to wear jeans to work during the campaign. The office surpassed its goal, which challenged every employee to raise $100. Executive Secretary Leslie Cox and Business Practice Specialist Lyndee Williams, both of the Southeast Division Office, graduated from the Leadership Barbour Program. Southeast Division Vice President Richard Hutto addressed the graduates about attributes of an effective leader, motivation to lead and opportunities to lead in the community. "Imagine the positive impact we could have on this county if we each inspired just one person who, in turn, inspired another," Hutto said. Tracy Booker, Phenix City customer service representative, graduated from the Phenix City/Russell County Leadership Program. "We are extremely proud of these individuals," said Hutto. "It is always great to see employees engaged in our communities."
