4 The Alabama Power Foundation has awarded scholarships to 21 students to attend college, trade or technical school. This is the foundation's 25th consecutive year for the scholarship program. "In these challenging times, education is essential," said foundation President John Hudson. "We are proud to assist these outstanding students as they continue their studies and build a solid foundation for future success." The $2,500 scholarships are awarded to dependent children of active, retired or deceased Alabama Power employees. Winners are selected based on academic merit and other factors by an independent organization, International Scholarship and Tuition Services. The award is renewable for the number of years normally required to complete an undergraduate degree, provided the honoree makes satisfactory academic progress. Since 1991, the foundation has awarded more than $4 million in scholarships, helping about 1,000 students pursue their higher education goals. Kelsey Hixon of Grove Hill is the winner of the Presidential Scholarship, which provides full tuition for four years to an Alabama institution of higher learning.
