Thumbs Up! Eastern Division Vice President Julia Segars received the Heart of an Eagle Award from the Choccolocco District of the Boy Scouts of America. The award is unique to the district (which includes Calhoun and Cleburne counties) and recognizes community members who embody the organization's values. The award was presented to Segars at the annual American Values Luncheon at the Anniston City Meeting Center. Wendell Saxon, Montgomery, has been inducted into the Wetumpka YMCA Hall of Fame. Saxon has been a member of the Wetumpka YMCA for 17 years and served on the board of directors for the past 10 years. He has been an advocate for the YMCA, coached youths and served as a fundraising chairman. He was recognized at a banquet at the Wetumpka Civic Center. s Matthew Bryant and Joslynn Owens, both of the Metro South- Pelham Office, gave presentations for students at the Riverchase Elementary School career fair as part of Alabama Power's Linemen, Engineers and Apprentice Programs (LEAP). The presentations focused on career opportunities in energy. Customer Peter Kimbrough called to commend Marcella Ridgeway and Jerry Newbolt, both of the Metro South-Pelham Office, for providing excellent service. Kimbrough had brought to the office documentation that was required for setting up electric service. Kimbrough said when he walked through the door, Newbolt quickly welcomed him and Ridgeway was "polite and friendly" as she handled his issue. Kimbrough said his mindset had been that big companies provide poor customer service. Kimbrough said Ridgeway and Newbolt restored his faith and changed his views. s The West Jefferson Office hosted students from Midfield High School. The students visited to practice paying a power bill. The teacher brought four students into the office with a "pretend" bill and money. The students each waited in line until they were called to pay their "bill." The customer service representatives answered their questions, gave them change using fake money and marked their bills paid. The students ended their visit by asking West Jefferson Office Supervisor John Sides questions. Thomas Croom, of Homewood, wrote a letter thanking Birmingham Division Meter Tester Dwight Russell for helping him when the front of his car became entangled with an exposed curb re-bar. "Mr. Russell came to my aid and re-set the disengaged portion of the car in quick fashion, saving my wife and me the ordeal of seeking out a body shop for corrective work," Croom wrote. "Mr. Russell to me is a fine example of hardworking utility employees who find time to render aid to fellow Alabama citizens." Corporate Relations Specialist Mike Oakley is the new director of the Alabama Association of School Boards second district. He has been on the Bibb County Board of Education since 1998 and, in his new role, Oakley represents 13 other school boards in the district. Ozark Merchandise Salesperson Brittany Killingsworth helped locate three rare miniature train sets for the widow of a Southern Nuclear employee. The woman had been unable to find the train sets to give to their grandchildren, as her husband had wished before he died last year. Trussville Crew Headquarters Line Clearing Team Leader Bill Standridge and Line Clearing Specialist Jerry McCain received a letter from Linda Joseph of the Hoover Beautification Board thanking the company and Birmingham employees for the "valuable contribution, which enabled us to provide trees to the schools for their Arbor Day celebration" at Aldridge Gardens. Employees spoke to several hundred students at Hewitt- Trussville High School during Engineering Week about career opportunities at Alabama Power. Those making presentations included Linemen Chad Gray, Ladarrius Clay and Mike Isbell, and Engineers Ross Morgan and Emily Dole. 55
