YEAR IN REVIEW 1 2016 was another successful year for Alabama Power and its employees who accomplished milestones at work and in their communities, maintaining national standards for reliability, customer service, innovation, trust and emergency assistance to others. Among the outstanding achievements of the company's 110th year: JANUARY The Edison Electric Institute (EEI) presented Alabama Power with the Emergency Recovery Award for outstanding power restoration efforts after a severe summer storm hit Alabama in July 2015. "The hardworking crews from Alabama Power are truly deserving of this recognition for their tremendous work to restore service in the face of difficult conditions," said EEI President Tom Kuhn. "Alabama Power's efforts to swiftly and safely restore service are representative of our industry's unwavering commitment to customer service." On July 14, 2015, a line of thunderstorms consisting of strong winds and severe lightning moved through Alabama. This violent weather caused 115,000 peak outages across the state. Alabama Power crews worked safely and quickly to restore service to more than 100,000 customers within 24 hours of the storm. ……….. Sixteen schools and nonprofit organizations across the state received nearly $60,000 in conservation education grants through the Alabama Power Foundation's Students to Stewards program, which supports dynamic stewardship, conservation education and outdoor classrooms. In partnership with the Alabama Wildlife Federation's Alabama Outdoor Classroom Program, Students to Stewards grantees receive technical and organizational assistance in creating their outdoor classrooms. The 2016 outdoor classroom grants went to the city of Heflin; Elmore County Board of Education; Meadow View Elementary School of Alabaster; Montevallo Elementary School PTO; Randolph County High School; Robert E. Lee Elementary School of Satsuma; and Southeast Alabama Human Development Council Inc. of Abbeville. The recipients of the curriculum grants were Admiral Moorer Middle School of Eufaula; Ashville High School; Blount County Education Foundation (Locust Fork High School); Blount County Education Foundation (Susan Moore Elementary and High School); Calera Middle School; Hollinger's Island Elementary School of Mobile; Keep Etowah Beautiful Inc. of Gadsden; Rocky Ridge Elementary School of Hoover; and the Vestavia Hills City Schools Foundation. ……….. Alabama Power was second nationally in the 2016 America's Most Trusted ranking of large residential electric utilities by Lifestory Research of California. Portland General Electric ranked highest in the study based on 17,898 consumer opinions. The annual ranking measures how trust impacts consumer evaluations of electric utilities in the United States. Alabama Power and Portland General switched positions from the 2015 rankings. "Trust is the new means by which people judge the companies that serve them," said Lifestory Research President Eric Snider. "Our consumer research on electric utilities finds that trust acts like a proxy in which rates, service and the company reputation are evaluated based on the trust people have in the utility." FEBRUARY Alabama Power's efforts to expand renewable energy and its long-running Renew Our Rivers campaign were among company initiatives highlighted in the 2016 Green Progress Report, issued annually by the nonprofit Green Resource Center for Alabama. In 2015, the Alabama Public Service Commission (PSC) approved Alabama Power's proposal to secure up to 500 megawatts of renewable energy generation over six years. The proposal was one of the top three projects of the year highlighted in the Green Progress Report. The report also cited the company's plans to install solar generation projects at Anniston Army Depot and Fort Rucker. The two solar projects are expected to produce a combined 20 megawatts of electricity — enough energy to supply about 4,200 homes. The company will have the ability to use the energy and the associated renewable energy credits, or sell them — together or separately — to benefit customers. ……….. The "Power of You" was the theme for the Alabama Power Service Organization's (APSO) annual convention, focusing on members' commitment to their communities and celebrating the positive impact APSO has had on Alabama and the company.
