Customer Paul Landers called to thank Gadsden Local Operations Linemen David McCord and Jeff Black for restoring power for Landers and a neighbor. Landers said their homes were the only two with power outages. He said McCord and Black did an "excellent job of getting service back on," and added he "really appreciates Alabama Power." The Fayette Power Delivery line crew received a handwritten card from Frasure and Wanda Flynn, of Sulligent, thanking the crew for its dedication and hard work. "Thank you for all you do," the Flynns wrote. "The other night when things were 'tough,' we worried about all the men out in that weather for so long. God's many blessings." Quentin Riggins, Alabama Power senior vice president of Governmental and Corporate Affairs, was selected to serve on the Auburn University Board of Trustees. Riggins was an All-Star linebacker on Auburn's football team from 1986 to 1989 and worked as a sideline reporter for the Auburn Sports Network for 25 years. Virginia Briggs, of Oxford, commended Johnny Calvin, Anniston local operations lineman, for repairing an issue that was affecting the connections in her service box, thus restoring power to her home. She said Calvin was "awesome, friendly and knowledgeable." On Jan. 18, Jarren Shields, accountant, Metro South Office, and DeRand Jones, customer services specialist, Metro Central Office, took part in National Operation Reveille, an effort to help provide housing for homeless veterans. During the one- day Birmingham event, eligible veterans received an apartment paid by vouchers. The event is a partnership between the Veterans Administration, United Way of Central Alabama, faith-based groups, city and county agencies, and businesses. Representing Alabama Power, Shields and Jones assisted the veterans in signing up for electric service for their new apartments, and handed out packets with information about company products, services and energy efficiency tips. "It was a great opportunity," Shields said. "Those veterans protected our country and fought for our freedom, so it was great to return the favor and serve them. It was also great to build those relationships and show the veterans that Alabama Power is there for them."
