The Alabama Power Shoreline Management and Environmental Affairs team partnered with the Lake Wedowee Property Owners Association on Feb. 28 to sink about 150 recycled Christmas trees in Lake Harris. The trees are a natural habitat for fish and join many other trees previously placed in company lakes. Alabama Power employees who assisted with the project were Mike Clelland, Wes Anderson, Patrick Graham, Sheila Smith, Crystal White and Wanda Hagan. Transmission Construction General Manager K-Rob Thomas received Auburn University's Young Alumni Achievement Award on March 4. Thomas, who graduated in 2001, was recognized for extraordinary accomplishments of a member of the Auburn Family age 40 and under. A mentor to students and a member of the AU College of Engineering advisory council, Thomas established the Dennis Weatherby Annual Scholarship Award, named for the founding director of Auburn's Minority Engineering Program, through the Alabama Power Academic Excellence Program. Eastern Division Alabama Power Service Organization (APSO) members took part in Read Across America Day, an annual nationwide celebration on March 2, Dr. Seuss' birthday. Seven Pell City and Ashville APSO volunteers read to 18 kindergarten classes at Coosa Valley, Iola Roberts, Eden and Ashville elementary schools. The employees also read to five classes at Kennedy Elementary School on March 6. The Anniston APSO subchapter sponsored the Read Across America event in Calhoun County. Eleven APSO members teamed with volunteers from local businesses to read to students in 122 classrooms at 22 schools. Anniston APSO volunteers entertained students with the book, "Saturday Night at the Dinosaur Stomp." The subchapter purchased a book for each classroom. The Alabama Legislature confirmed the appointment of Corporate Affairs Manager Leroy Nix to the University of Montevallo board of trustees. Nix is a 2003 graduate of Montevallo. Forest Oaks Elementary teachers gave compliments to Teri Strickland, Metro South-Pelham Office, and Cris Dorough, Columbiana Office, for their recent Safe-T-Opolis demonstration for students and faculty at the school in Chelsea. "They had great conversations with the children. I am highly impressed. The whole presentation was very informative and kept their attention," said a teacher who gave the employees the highest rating.
