14 ENERGIZERS Birmingham Energizers provide exceptional assistance to anglers Thanks to Angie Webb, thousands of physically and mentally challenged children have received a helping hand in fishing from members of the Energizers and Alabama Power Service Organization (APSO). It was Webb's brainchild, about 23 years ago, to mobilize members of the company's charitable service groups to work in the Exceptional Anglers event at Oak Mountain State Park. Webb, who was president of the Birmingham Division Energizers, named Fred Rogers as event chairman. From that point on, the retiree group and Magic City APSO members have partnered in Gone Fishin', Not Just Wishin'. Webb said hundreds of Birmingham Division Energizers have volunteered throughout the years. Doug Page, who grew up fishing on ponds around Opp, delighted in spending a recent day with the children. "I love being able to see the kids enjoy themselves and get out to do things they don't ordinarily do," said Page, treasurer for Birmingham Energizers. "It's so rewarding to see these children learn to fish." On May 9, more than 1,000 special-needs children from Jefferson and Shelby county schools learned basic fishing skills. They enjoyed painting, arts and cras, live music and storytelling. Student catches fish. More than 1,000 special children head to Oak Mountain State Park each year to learn fishing, often with the guiding hand of an employee or retiree volunteer from Alabama Power
