CONTENTS COMMUNITY Each year, Alabama Power employees lend their expertise and assistance to a variety of races and educational events at Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham. Page 1 COMMUNITY Bib & Tucker Sew-Op in Birmingham used an Alabama Power Foundation grant to help provide training for work that has been a life-changing experience for many people. Page 5 LEADERSHIP Most people aren't aware that the trade association started by Thomas Edison in New York in 1885 has its headquarters in Alabama Power's Corporate Headquarters. Page 7 APSO Members of the Alabama Power Service Organization volunteer their time, talents and funds each year to Special Olympics competitions across the state. Page 11 ENERGIZERS More than 1,000 special children head to Oak Mountain State Park each year to learn fishing, oen with the guiding hand of an employee or retiree volunteer from Alabama Power. Page 14 ENVIRONMENT For the past two years, fish hawks have been taking advantage of platforms built so the big birds can build their nests on Neely Henry and Lay lakes. Page 17 ENVIRONMENT Lake Martin residents and other volunteers are adopting segments of shoreline and islands in a cleanup effort developed by Alabama Power employees. Page 21 OUR TOWN Bay Minee is familiar to anyone who has ever traveled through Alabama to reach Gulf Shores, being about an hour's drive from the beach. But the town is much more than a means to an end. Page 23 PROFILE Paul Combs is an Appliance Service technician in the Selma Office during the normal workday, then spends a lot of his time off tending to thousands of honeybees. Page 34 ENERGY Alabama Solar A is producing enough electricity outside LaFayee to power 18,000 homes. Alabama Power has a long-term contract to provide the energy to Walmart stores in Alabama. Page 37 EDUCATION Students in the Lineman, Engineers and Apprentice Programs tour Alabama Power plants and facilities and are oen persuaded to take a LEAP to studies that will support the utility industry. Page 39 HONORS Distribution Engineering Services Manager Bobby Hawthorne has been elected an officer on the Edison Electric Institute's Mutual Assistance/Emergency Preparedness Commiee. Page 41 HAPPY TRAILS Former PD Distribution General Clerk Teri Terry spent 38 years with the company but found the time to facilitate many of the improvements to the Rise Center in Tuscaloosa.
