Water whys
We don't thank veterans enough for their courageous,
selfless service to our country, oen at terrible sacrifice.
Memorial Day a few weeks ago reminded us of that.
e Col. Robert L. Howard State Veterans Home in Pell City
is doing its part, beyond just providing care for veterans.
e staff works to create a robust roster of activities for the
veterans, including visits to concerts, museums, a casino,
UAB football and basketball games and, this past month,
to Logan Martin Lake to fish. Writer Carolanne Roberts
and photographer Bernard Troncale captured the delight in
veterans' eyes as they caught fish and maybe told a few fish
tales about their days in the service.
e recent Memorial Day weekend also brought the return of
River Church, Clanton United Methodist Church's services on
Lake Mitchell every Sunday at 8:30 a.m. from Memorial Day to
Labor Day. Worshippers don't even have to leave their boats.
Also in this issue, cookbook author Elizabeth Heiskell offers
some tips – and delicious recipes – that'll ensure a successful
weekend of entertaining; the Tallapoosa School of Art on Lake
Martin takes a better, more inclusive approach to hands-on
instruction in painting; and Alabama Power works to promote
native plants that provide spawning sites for fish and fishing
sites for anglers.
Enjoy!
