Water whys is winter edition of Shorelines has highs and lows – literally from mountaintops to beneath the waters of Lake Mitchell. e indoor rock climbing gym GadRock is something new for Gadsden and the sport. While most rock climbing gyms are huge, sprawling places, GadRock decided to go in the opposite direction. e smaller footprint of the "microgym" still packs a lot of fun in a tight space. Plus, the location – right on the Coosa River – can't be beat. Unobstructed views of the water are a treat for climbers as they ascend higher and higher. While GadRock climbers are way above the Coosa, further downstream, Alabama Power biologists are going under water to help save endangered snails. e employees, along with state and federal agencies, continue their work to survey and help save two snails that were once plentiful on the Coosa. While on Lake Martin, a group of volunteers are working to save people from harm. e Lake Martin Resource Association has maintained more than 400 buoys on Lake Martin since soon aer the group was formed 50 years ago. However, recently, LMRA has started a campaign to "Light Up Lake Martin" and put lights on hazard markers. So far, the group is about halfway to its goal of lighting 200 buoys. Finally, in this holiday season, we have two stories about family. For those entertaining, we have recipes from Southern Baked Pie Company and cookbook author Amanda Wilbanks. Nothing quite says Christmas like a glass of eggnog, and Wilbanks' recipe does not disappoint. We also go back in time to remember what life was like for those who grew up in Lake Jordan Village. Villages like those at Jordan and early Alabama Power hydroelectric dams offered a real sense of community. You can hear it in the recollections from those who called the village home. Enjoy! — Justin Averette 3 www.apcshorelines.com
