43 printing. I owe every bit of that to Roger." He values Sanderson's friendship and understanding. In 2013, Moore's son, Leon Jr., injured his leg playing basketball. While recuperating on crutches for six weeks, L.J. couldn't ride the bus to and from school. "Roger made all the occasion to help me, and that really touched me a lot," Moore said. "He allowed me to get to work later since I had to take my son to school, and he let me leave later to make up my work time." Ethics are Sanderson's guide In his role as coordinator, Sanderson said it's important to maintain ethics. "I feel the people that operate Alabama Power Company are ethical and teach ethics," Sanderson said. "Being ethical and keeping your integrity – I've tried to maintain that. "I hope that others remember me as a person of integrity, who tried to follow the lessons of customer service," he added. "I'm leaving a bunch of great folks here, and they know what customer service is all about." Good customer service goes hand in hand with being fair and equitable, he said. But it doesn't require one to necessarily agree that the customer is always right. "But I'll treat them like they are right," he said. "Sometimes they don't know how to ask for what they want. I may have to bend a lile bit to give them what they want." As in any job, Sanderson has handled his share of difficult situations and had occasional dealings with external customers. He learned how to smooth "ruffled feathers," even when a mistake was not his own. "Those times helped me see how much the customer can reflect on the company," Sanderson said. "The point is to keep someone from further embarrassment and to ease the situation where it makes the experience less painful." Happily seeking retirement Sanderson is looking forward to seling back and enjoying life with his family. "I've done what had to be done every day," he said. "I got up and followed the routine. But when I retire, I'm not going to follow a schedule. My wife, Sharon, will find a few things for me to do. She likely has a short list because she knows she'll need to remind me. "Our plan is to visit our eight grandkids and three great- grandkids a lot," Sanderson said. "Three of them are in Praville, and we want to see them more. We're not going to make big plans – we'll just take it day by day." Sanderson is known for stopping whatever he's doing to aid customers.
