23 "Construction was completely at the mercy of the river level," Uhrig recalled. Persistence was the name of the game. A 15-man crew worked 12 hours a day for 118 days over a six-month period. "Once we addressed some drainage issues inside the (construction barrier) wall and the weather improved, we were able to keep raising the bank one li at a time until we were at elevation of 30 feet," he said. Uhrig credited the team effort that typifies the company's traditional way of problem- solving, including efforts by employees of Southern Company Services Civil Design, Alabama Power Environmental Compliance and the Alabama Power Maintenance Crew from Monroeville. Finally, there was light at the end of the tunnel. "It was a huge relief aer the tower was secured and the bank was about halfway done," Uhrig said. "You could take a breath at that point knowing the end was in sight, and the bank was tall enough at that point to weather the normal summertime floods that come along." The project was finished in November. Mission accomplished. Construction site at three-quarters complete. Completed riverbank stabilization around transmission towers.
