43 company through the sale and construction of distribution equipment. In 1993, Fortner was promoted to distribution specialist in the Tuscaloosa Office. Over the next 13 years, she continued to work in Distribution, moving from the Pelham Office to Corporate Planning to Enterprise and finally to Auburn. While in Auburn, Fortner, who had worked 30 years at Alabama Power by that time, decided to return to college. She received her business degree from Faulkner University in 2007 before taking on the budget analyst role in Eastern Division. Like most Distribution employees, Fortner has seen a lot while on storm duty. "Until you've experienced a devastating storm, either personally or as a first responder, you don't realize how destructive they can be," Fortner said. "I remember we would go in and sometimes there would be 20 houses gone, and then there would be one standing all alone. It's so humbling. You realize we're not in control." Mark Fowler said Fortner was like a ray of sunshine in the office. "Angie won everybody over with her kindness," said Fowler, distribution specialist, Eastern Division Office. "Before she came to our workgroup in Eastern Division, we were all prey serious. Within three months aer she arrived, everybody was joking and laughing." Robin Hill, Distribution Control Center supervisor – Southern, remembers when Fortner's caring support meant a great deal to Hill and her family. "When Angie and I were working together in Auburn, my 3-year-old lile girl got the flu, and was hospitalized and quarantined for 10 days. She was my only child, and I was so scared," said Hill. "The workgroup made my daughter a big basket of prizes, games, stuffed animals and books. It made my daughter's day. Angie didn't have to tell me; I knew the basket was her idea and knew that she had put it together. Angie made everyone she came into contact with feel appreciated and loved." Since her retirement, Fortner has spent her free time making quilts – a hobby she began seven years ago. She is the president of the Lick Skillet Quilt Guild in Oxford and gathers weekly with the other members to work on their quilting projects. Fortner celebrated St. Patrick's Day with engineering clerk Dottie Whitley, who is now retired. Fowler and Fortner on the shooting range.
