Eastern Division Customer Service Manager Rod Nowlin was named 2019 Kiwanian of the Year by the Kiwanis Club of Anniston. Nowlin was recognized for serving as chairman of the Kiwanis Club's long-term fundraising effort in support of the Anniston Museum of Natural History. The funds will be used by the museum to renovate its Children's Gallery. The Eastern Division Office hosted an Alabama/ Auburn Food Drive benefiting Community Enabler Developer. The office provided the nonprofit organization with 447 canned goods and other nonperishable foods. Community Enabler Developer is an Anniston agency that provides food, clothes and utility assistance to people, from the newly unemployed to those who are chronically poor. The Eastern Distribution Control Center's "Roll Tide" box was the departmental winner. The Auburn "War Eagle" boxes, combined from each floor, took the bragging rights as the overall winner. During the Southern Company Week of Service, 64 Eastern Division Alabama Power Service Organization (APSO) volunteers assembled 30 bat houses. Employees from the Eastern Division executive office, Division and Local Accounting, Marketing, Eastern Distribution Control Center, Engineering, Building Services, Transmission, crews and Gadsden Steam Plant took part in the effort. The Eastern Division chapter built the houses as part of a statewide APSO project. More than 100 APSO members statewide built bat houses that will be installed in wooded areas and near Alabama Power lakes. Western Division APSO reached out to the community in a variety of ways during the holiday season. • Jasper APSO members decorated a Christmas tree on the town square as part of the Hope for Women Festival of Lights and made a $500 donation. They took part in the Chamber of Commerce of Walker County's annual Christmas parade and rang bells for the Salvation Army Red Kele Campaign. Jasper APSO volunteers took part in the holiday wreath-laying ceremony at the Alabama National Cemetery and donated $500 to purchase 33 wreaths. During this moving ceremony, wreaths are placed at the 5,700 gravesites. • Tuscaloosa APSO sub-area members got in the holiday spirit by taking part in the Tinsel Trail sponsored by Tuscaloosa's One Place. Volunteers decorated a Christmas tree on Tuscaloosa's River Walk and donated $300 to One Place, an organization that provides resources to promote self-sufficiency, strengthen families and prevent child abuse and neglect, thus improving the quality of life for all members. • The South APSO sub-area chapter purchased bicycles and other gis for Salvation Army Angels provided by local Department of Human Resources offices. They wrapped gis during the holiday season to raise funds for South sub-area projects. Thumbs Up! Eastern Division APSO members built bat houses.
