EDUCATION 8 The Alabama Power Foundation has awarded merit-based scholarships to 20 exceptional students who will attend college, trade or technical school. The Class of 2020 marks the 29th consecutive year for the scholarship program. Scholarships are awarded to top-performing children of active, retired or deceased employees, and are renewable for up to three years. Students must be a high school senior or post-secondary undergraduate to be eligible for a scholarship. Selection criteria includes academic achievement, leadership, service in the community and participation in extracurricular activities. Recipients were selected by an independent company. Since 1991, the foundation has awarded more than $4 million in scholarships, setting more than 1,200 students on the path toward their future careers. "We are especially proud to honor these hard-working students," said Myla Calhoun, president of the Alabama Power Foundation. "Students need educational support and active engagement during these unprecedented times.
