Birmingham network of trails
boosts community, economy
Nearly 100 years ago Olmsted Brothers, one of America's most prestigious
architect fi rms, developed a landscape plan for Birmingham and Jefferson
County. The brothers were known for their extensive work within the National
Park System, including Acadia Everglades, Great Smoky Mountains, Yosemite
and Redwood parks.
"A Park System for Birmingham," published by the Birmingham Park and
Recreation Board in 1925, called for a substantial increase in park space with
both an aesthetic- and conservation-inspired design.
