18 W ith the help of the Alabama Power Foundation, what was once a dark, dingy alley in the middle of downtown Wetumpka has been given new life, becoming a cheerful outdoor gathering place where people stop to share a cup of coffee, a snack and a bit of conversation. "When I became Main Street executive director in 2016, downtown was mostly full of empty storefronts and cars that drove through it much too fast," said Jenny Stubbs. "Today, I can look out my window into the Alleyway and see a dozen people walk through in half an hour. Because downtown now has inviting spaces, particularly the Alleyway, more and more people are comfortable being downtown, enjoying the greenery, sitting and chatting with friends and, my favorite, learning about our town's history while appreciating local art. It's a warm, welcoming space that has helped transform our historic business district." continued The Alleyway in downtown. Photo by Phil Free
