10 But Shelby said nothing in her 29 years prepared her for teaching in a pandemic. "It's just hard," she said. "The kids want to love on you, and you can't love on them. It's kind of like – I don't know how to say it – that part of loving on them is missing because you have to be socially distanced. I have to constantly enforce social distancing and spend a lot of time sanitizing the classroom." Nowadays it seems like something changes every day for teachers and students, Corcoran said. There are "always new precautions, new situations" that require them to adapt for their health and safety while still excelling in the classroom. She said the desk shields have helped make the best of a tough time. "I'm very thankful for the grant from the Alabama Power Foundation," she said. "If not for them, I don't know if it would have been possible to purchase all of the shields for my students. And they have absolutely loved being able to sit in groups with their friends."
