37 CULTURE AND INCLUSION Advancing inclusion at Alabama Power and in the communities employees serve THE CCI SHARES PLANS, LAUNCHES KEY INITIATIVES Cultivating a workplace culture where all employees are valued, respected and treated fairly is foundational at Alabama Power. By empowering employees to contribute to their fullest, the company leverages a full range of experiences, backgrounds and perspectives that enables the team to serve Alabama Power customers with excellence each day. The Council on Culture and Inclusion (CCI) is tasked with providing the strategic framework for the company's culture initiatives, receiving employee input and ideas. Employee feedback helped shape the CCI's plans for 2021, including more opportunities for employee education, career development and staying connected. In addition, work toward racial equity is ongoing, including cultural education, increased leadership education and accountability, workforce development and supplier diversity efforts. During the January virtual town hall, Jeff Peoples, executive vice president of Customer and Employee Services said, "We are dedicated to enhancing the employee experience at Alabama Power. Your input and ideas have been valuable as we've developed plans for the year, and we encourage employees to participate and take advantage of these resources." 2021 FOCUS AREAS • Education: We are committed to developing our team and cultivating an inclusive work environment. Through the work of the CCI, career development and inclusion training opportunities will be provided for all employees. • Engagement: To strengthen the connection within our team, the CCI will provide opportunities for employees to connect with leadership, officers and each other encouraging interaction, open dialogue and relationship-building. • Communication: Consistent communication will provide employees with resources and information to help instill the company's culture focus. • Partnership: The CCI will work to provide opportunities to underrepresented communities, including recruitment of new and diverse talent, expansion of workforce development programs and a renewed focus on supplier diversity. • Progression: We are working to prevent bias and barriers throughout the talent journey including recruitment effectiveness, work environment and pay data. PROPELLING CAREER DEVELOPMENT In February, the company launched Propel, an open enrollment series of skill-building workshops, business updates, benefits guidance, health awareness and more. Offered virtually, Propel courses are designed for increased schedule flexibility in training opportunities. Course topics align with the company's leadership competencies and can be integrated into employee development plans. "Through the Voice of the Employee survey, we heard the need for additional career development tools and resources," said Jeannine Bailey, talent management manager. "We're excited to offer Propel courses throughout the year and have already begun receiving positive feedback from participants." FOSTERING AN INCLUSIVE CULTURE As part of a commitment to employee development and creating an inclusive work environment, all Alabama Power employees will participate in inclusive culture training beginning in 2021. This round of training is the first step in providing annual diversity, equity and inclusion training. Courses have been tailored for managers and employees. For managers, the course will be focused on ensuring that leaders are well-educated on the topics of diversity, equity and inclusion and have the tools and resources to build trust, encourage compassion and foster constructive dialogue. For individual contributors, the course will ensure that all team members understand the part they play in fostering an environment of inclusion. STAYING CONNECTED Employee engagement is key for the company's culture focus to permeate throughout the company. In first quarter, the CCI introduced Culture Committees, groups of employees across the company who are "boots on the ground" helping advocate for and promote an inclusive culture within their departments. Culture Committees will help facilitate networking, exchange ideas and make suggestions on ways to enhance employee satisfaction and work effectiveness. "My interest in the Culture Committee was ignited with the word 'culture,'" said Willee Chambliss, real estate specialist and committee member. "I wanted to serve on the committee as a voice for my colleagues and to enhance the department and work environment within Corporate Real Estate. My passion to serve increased in early 2020 with the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis and the continuing racial inequities in society. I have been privileged to play a role in reestablishing the focus of the CRE Culture Committee toward diversity and inclusion for all in our department." By Whitney Massey
