EDUCATION Top students receive college scholarships T he Alabama Power Foundation has awarded scholarships to 21 students to attend college, trade or technical school. This is the foundation's 22nd consecutive year of the scholarship program. "We are proud to assist these outstanding students as they continue their studies and build a strong foundation for their future," said John Hudson, president of the Alabama Power Foundation. The $2,500 scholarships are awarded to dependent children of active, retired or deceased Alabama Power employees. Winners are selected based on academic merit and other factors by an independent organization, Scholarshiap Management Services. The award is renewable for the number of years normally required to complete an undergraduate degree program, provided the honoree makes satisfactory academic progress. One Presidential Scholarship is awarded annually, which pays four years of tuition to a state college or university. The 2013 Scholar is Payton Edberg, daughter of Geneva Local Operations Lineman Brian Edberg and granddaughter of Slocomb Local Operations Lineman Tom Edberg. She graduated from Enterprise High School and will attend the University of Alabama in the fall. The 2013 Vocational Scholar is Stephen Hart, son of Jasper Customer Service Representative Steve Hart, and a graduate of Oakman High School. The vocational scholarship pays two years of tuition to a state trade or technical school. Stephen Hart will study at Bevill State Community College. Since 1991, the Alabama Power Foundation has awarded nearly $4 million in scholarships, helping about 1,000 students pursue their higher education goals.
