13 The Alabama Power Foundation has awarded merit- based scholarships to 22 exceptional students who will attend college, trade or technical school. The Class of 2021 marks the 30th consecutive year for the scholarship program. Scholarships are awarded to top-performing children of active, retired or deceased employees, and are renewable for up to three years. Students must be a high school senior or postsecondary undergraduate to be eligible for a scholarship. Selection criteria include academic achievement, leadership, service in the community and participation in extracurricular activities. Recipients were selected by an independent company. Since 1991, the foundation has awarded more than $4 million in scholarships, setting more than 1,200 students on a path toward their future careers. "The foundation takes great pride in awarding these students for their scholastic performance," said Tequila Smith, president of the Alabama Power Foundation. "We aim to encourage and inspire students to continue making academic goals their priority, now and in the future."
