Presidential Awards Miller's Emergency Response Team (ERT) received a call about an unresponsive man on-site. Several members arrived at the scene and began CPR. The team opened an airway to aid the man's breathing and an automated external defibrillator was also used. ERT members coordinated with security so they could quickly lead paramedics to their co-worker. Members of the Miller ERT assisting were Brandon Williams, Jason House, Derrick Cagle, Chuck Ray, Heath Franks, Richard Gurganus, Dion Oliver, Randy Vines, LaWayne Vintson, RK Richardson and Anne Marie Smith. The Presidential Award of Honor recognizes these employees who took extraordinary measures to save or sustain the life of another person. Many cited training they received at Alabama Power as crucial to their ability to respond. "Without that investment in me and our annual CPR training from the company, I don't know if I would have had the confidence to jump in like I did," said Skoglund. "The thing that you always hope is that you'll be calm," said Pigott. "That when that instant happens, you maintain your calm because other people might not. Panic never really helps anything. And that goes to the importance of training." "When it happens, you just don't think about it," said Newlin. "You just go. You go for it and help somebody." Presidential Award of Honor recipients are typically recognized with a luncheon at Corporate Headquarters with family and company leaders. Due to the pandemic, the luncheons for 2020 and 2021 recipients have been postponed until 2022. "It is our privilege to honor these employees for their brave actions that represent the highest ideals of our company," said CEO Mark Crosswhite. "Safety is our No. 1 value at work and at home, and we are committed to our customers and the communities we serve. These employees exemplify both of those values and I'm proud to recognize them." "Having the initiative and knowledge to act at any moment takes true courage, and I'm proud of these employees for their actions," said Executive Vice President of Customer and Employee Services Jeff Peoples. "Being dedicated to Safety First even when facing difficult circumstances is how we keep ourselves, our families and our communities safe." The Presidential Award of Honor was established in 1985 by the Central Safety Committee and has been awarded to more than 200 employees. Nominations are submitted by executive management and approved by the committee. By Mitchell Kilpatrick Preston Smith Dwayne Hill Ike Pigott 8
