9 ENERGIZERS about the functions of the retiree organization. Former state board members-at-large John Mills and John Taylor, both longtime Energizers leaders, were among Franklin's closest mentors. "Those three took me under their wing," Franklin said. "They gave me a lot of direction, and I met with them many times." In addition to attending Energizers chapter meetings — driving a whopping 108,000 miles — Franklin organized logistics of the company's annual retiree luncheons statewide. He has been retirees' trusted adviser, answering questions ranging from health care benefits to pensions and other matters. "Our retirees call me for advice," Franklin said. "They respect me and know that I will try to get their issue resolved." Franklin attributes some of his greatest life lessons to working with the Energizers. "I've got gigantic respect for our retirees," he said. "I've had many, many conversations with our retirees. This company was built on their hard work. The Energizers are upfront — they tell you exactly how they feel. You always know how they stand. They are 100% honest, and they are a fun group to be around." His biggest disappointment during the past two years was the need to curtail in-person meetings because of the pandemic. Despite the restrictions, many chapters have flourished as they conduct meetings via Zoom and continue with fundraising events for nonprofits. Energizers state President Becky York Becky York has depended on Franklin's guidance while maneuvering their 1,500 members through the pandemic. "We've had great leadership by Becky York these past two years," Franklin said. Longtime Eastern Division Chapter member and state president-elect James Glover James Glover will take the reins in 2023. "James has an excellent heart for service, and I know he'll also do well," Franklin said. Looking toward the future Franklin said working at Alabama Power was "definitely a best decision." His brother, Mark Franklin Mark Franklin, is Technical Training manager for Southern Company Services at Bevill State Community College in Jasper. Franklin's father was happy knowing his sons were employed with a company that offered good opportunities. "One time, I overheard my Dad say, 'I don't have to worry about my boys, Don and Mark – they got on with a good company.' It was a burden off him," Franklin said of his father, who was a Bessemer policeman. "The older I get, the more I realize how good this company is," Franklin said. "It reaffirms what I hear from our retirees every day. I couldn't be happier, and that's why I tell retirees I've got the best job at Alabama Power. My 14-year- old and 10-year-old granddaughters have been proud to tell people, 'My Poppi works at Alabama Power Company.'" He looks forward to spending more time with his four grandchildren and his wife, Pat, who recently retired as a nurse manager at Princeton Baptist Medical Center after 31 years. The Franklins aren't hanging up their hats at retirement: They will join the Energizers. "I can't wait to go to the retiree luncheons and meet with all of my friends from Alabama Power," he said. "It thrills me. I can't wait to take my place in the Energizers." At top, Franklin with Bob and Diane O'Daniel. PHOTOS BY PHIL FREE 9
