Recent retiree Joel Harris worked 65 hours over five days of fistball competition at Birmingham-Southern College (BSC). "I had originally intended to volunteer at multiple venues and events but was asked to be the sport team captain, which required I be at BSC the entire time that fistball activities or preparations were underway," said Harris, who retired in 2021 as Miller Steam Plant environmental manager. "My responsibilities were to ensure that all field of play volunteer responsibilities were adequately staffed and performed timely and correctly. These included ball persons, team transportation from practice field to field of play, maintaining an adequate supply of drinking water and sport drinks for players and officials, sideline cleanup and other miscellaneous activities." Harris was a liaison between the International Fistball Association staff and World Games staff for special requests and needs. He volunteered because "it sounded fun and interesting" and his retiree schedule was flexible. "I also wanted to help Birmingham put the Games on successfully and present a positive image of our area to the country and world," Harris said. "My best memory is learning about a very interesting sport I had never heard of prior to the games and getting to watch the best athletes in the world in that sport play while literally standing on the sidelines."
