17 CBRS Citizens Broadband Radio Service •An access and authorization framework established by the Federal Communications Commission to accommodate shared federal and commercial use of the 3550-3700 MHz band (3.5 GHz band). •Alabama Power purchased priority access licenses (PALs) of 3.5 MHz spectrum in the FCC's 2020 3.5 MHz Spectrum Auction to be contiguous across the company's service territory as an important piece of the long-term communication strategy for grid modernization. IDMS/ADMS Integrated Distribution Management System/ Advanced Distribution Management System •Software that integrates Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA), Distribution Management System (DMS) and Outage Management System (OMS) into one system. •Power Delivery uses ADMS as a platform for all the tools and applications necessary to manage the distribution system efficiently, allowing system users to gain situational awareness in a live dynamic format. FISR Fault Isolation System Restoration •A model-based application that analyzes dynamic emerging outages to develop possible restoration plans, checks the plan's feasibility against power flow results and implements the plan using SCADA controls. •FISR is one of the most important ADMS applications Alabama Power uses daily. Electronic Recloser Deployment •An automatic, high-voltage, protective switch that senses when trouble occurs on the distribution system. •In 2017, Alabama Power created a 10-year automation strategy to deploy and install more than 5,000 electronic recloser devices on the distribution system, with the goal of segmenting customers into 300-400 blocks and placing devices at locations that decrease line exposure. Data Analytics •In 2019, Alabama Power established a Power Delivery Data Analytics (PDDA) team. •PDDA uses aggregated Power Delivery data to determine where to make capital investment into our system to reduce operation and maintenance costs and improve customer reliability. •This data is used by Central Engineering to develop work and creative solutions for reliability reporting, understanding system performance and improving customer satisfaction. Undergrounding • In 2017, Alabama Power piloted a program to convert existing overhead distribution lines to underground, targeting those that require high levels of maintenance due to accessibility. • In 2021, coordination of the program shifted to the company's Power Delivery Central Engineering group. The power delivery data analytics tool Grid Inform is used to guide selections going forward, with input from local engineering offices.
