In time for the holidays and beyond, the Energizers retiree organization is helping provide access to and from doctor visits for underserved residents. In September, the statewide Energizers organization gave a $5,000 gift to Kid One Transport of Birmingham. The nonprofit helps expectant mothers and children get to and from doctor visits, bridging the transportation gap and allowing thousands to receive much- needed medical care. Under the Energizers umbrella, more than 1,100 retiree volunteers work through 11 local chapters across the state, contributing nearly 35,000 volunteer hours a year. Alan Morrow, president-elect of Southeast Energizers for 2026, said his chapter is proud to help underprivileged kids and moms get to medical appointments. "It's something you don't think about, but it's so needed when people don't have a ride," Morrow said. "If you don't drive or have access to a car, you need help getting to the doctor, and that costs money, too." Southeast Energizers are spreading Christmas cheer to underserved people in the Wiregrass through their support of 501(c)(3) nonprofits. The chapter recently purchased 100 McDonald's pancake breakfast tickets from the Dothan Kiwanis Club. Morrow and his team gave 50 meal vouchers to two nonprofits, which distributed them to homeless clients in the Dothan area. The Harbor provides free groceries to about 400 families and individuals each week. The Ark is a nonprofit ministry. "These groups told me that their clients really liked it," said Morrow, a Southeast Energizer member for about seven years. "People got a good, full breakfast and it didn't cost them anything. We got a lot of feedback from that, that the people that The Ark and Harbor House served were really excited about it and liked going to McDonald's." In September, Southeast Division Energizers donated 135 pounds of dry goods to the Wiregrass Area Food Bank. Morrow is glad the chapter's gift helped stock up the food bank in time to help children returning to school, as well as the upcoming holidays. During the Dec. 3 chapter meeting, members will present checks to seven nonprofits that support residents. Morrow noted that Southeast Energizer members often suggest various nonprofits to assist and present ideas quarterly to the board. "We try to spread our giving around Dothan, Enterprise, Ozark, Eufaula and Headland to help benefit as many areas as we can," Morrow said.
