PowerofGood.com | Summer 2014 13 "What we provide is much more than just the activity itself. We honor the children's fallen hero and acknowledge their loss, but we focus on the possibilities and positives out there for children," Lewis says. The Lewises keep in touch with each family by writing letters and making phone calls, checking on the family and child's progress. "Shelli has been great. She sends me a note each Memorial Day and her calls mean so much to us," Bradfi eld says. "She helped us fi nd Khloe's swim teacher and has been really encouraging." Hundreds of stories like Khloe's across the state show the program works. From 6-year-old Trey Green, who plays football because his father, police offi cer Steven Green, was a football coach, to Elizabeth McFall, 14, and her brother Matthew, 10, of Helena who take part in CrossFit training. CrossFit training keeps Elizabeth and Matthew active throughout the year and builds confi dence and muscle. Their father, Army Staff Sergeant Thomas McFall, was killed in Baghdad in 2007. Their mother, Emily McFall, al- ready was training with CrossFit and saw it as an opportunity for Matthew to be around male role models. For Elizabeth, CrossFit has helped her branch out and become more social. "She is so much like her father, and it is from CrossFit that she is really coming into her own," McFall says. "I am so appreciative. I could not have done this alone." This past Memorial Day, Angels of America's Fallen took part in the Blue Star Salute Day in Mobile, a celebration of veterans from all armed forces in Alabama. "It's an honor to host an event like this here in Mobile," says Beth Thomas, of Alabama Power's Mobile Division. "Even more unique is that the event was held here at the Battle- ship USS Alabama, which honors Alabama veterans." As the Lewises plan for the fu- ture, they look forward to Angels of America's Fallen growth nationwide and appreciate the support they have received in the organization's early years. "Alabama Power was one of the fi rst to support us. It was such a boost to see that kind of response, especially being natives of Alabama," Lewis says. "That you believed in what we are doing really shows the people and the patriotism of Ala- bama; we can't thank you enough." "what we provide is much more than just the activity itself. we honor the children's fallen hero and acknowledge their loss, but we focus on the possibilities and positives out there for children."
