10 'Giving for good' by Birmingham Division Giving is the specialty of Birmingham Division Chapter members Energizers, who contribute their time and talent in many ways. By July 1, members had amassed 1,670 volunteer hours. Correspondence secretary/reporter Sara Callahan said members devote time helping neighbors with yard work; sitting with patients in hospitals; taking friends and neighbors who can't drive to doctor visits; and delivering meals. They also serve the American Red Cross, Positive Maturity and other nonprofit groups. At the April 23 meeting, 38 members heard Detective Kate Alexander of the Jefferson County Sheriff 's Office tell how seniors can protect themselves from fraud and theft. Nearly 50 members attended the June 18 meeting, with Fitness and Wellness Manager Matt Turncliff of St. Vincent's Hospital, who discussed senior fitness, exercise, balance and falls, and health problems. Members took part in a group exercise that demonstrated how to stay strong in mind and body. The chapter donated $1,500 to First Light and St. Clair Boy's Ranch in 2013. Pecan pies on way to Chilton County members Chilton County members will meet Thursday, Aug. 1 at the Grand Old Café in Clanton to discuss their yearly nomination for the Sam Booker Award and other chapter business. Secretary/ Reporter Bo Blankenship said members will soon be out and about selling Priester's pecan pies, one of the chapter's major projects for 2013. Members will receive their tickets for chocolate-pecan and regular pecan pies in August. Pies are $12. Busy time ahead for Corporate members Members "powered up" at their July meeting in the Electra room at Corporate Headquarters, planning activities for the remainder of the year and introducing the 2014 slate of officers, said chapter President Bill Hanks. Corporate Division Energizers and APSO's Magic City Chapter will work together to present the annual auction at Corporate Headquarters on Wednesday, Aug. 21. These charitable groups will hold a silent and live auction in the auditorium from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Energizers' proceeds will go to the Birmingham chapter of the American Red Cross, and APSO will make a gift to Magic Moments. Eastern Division members in the know During Eastern Division's April meeting, members heard about the latest Medicare news from Cyndi Caine, social work coordinator - Community Engagement for the East Alabama Regional Planning and Development Commission. At the June meeting, Energizers presented a gift to Easter Seals Camp ASCCA, accepted by the Director of Marketing Communications, Dana Rickman. History comes to life at Gadsden meeting Gadsden Energizers met Thursday, June 12 to hear retired Army Col. Jerry Heard give a talk about the national flags of eight countries, including Japan and several European nations. Heard showed the flags of eight countries, giving a bit of history about each. Energizers were most interested to learn about "Old Glory," and what it means to U.S. citizens. Heard asked Energizers to pass the story on to their children and grandchildren. Eastern Division Energizers presented a gift to Easter Seals Camp ASCCA, accepted by Rickman (second from left).
