MAY • Volunteers from Alabama Power were among about 1,500 people who helped provide affordable housing to 11 families during the 10th Annual Home Builders Blitz in the Winchester Hills community. Employees from Residential, Commercial and Industrial Marketing, Human Resources and Power Delivery worked on a four-bedroom Habitat for Humanity home. • As part of its efforts to demonstrate the advantages of buying plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, Alabama Power Fleet Services added six Ford Fusion PEVs and assigned them to employees. The cars were purchased in support of the Edison Electric Institute initiative for utilities to spend 5 percent of their 2015 capital budgets on PEV technology. • Thanks to a $67,000 donation from the Energizers retirement group, Project Lifesaver is spreading across Alabama. The nonprofit campaign ensures the purchase of transmitter bracelets to locate lost people who have Alzheimer's, autism, Down syndrome or memory loss. JUNE • Environmental Affairs employees reached one of the biggest accomplishments in the group's history by earning national accreditation for the General Test Lab at the General Services Complex in Calera. The National Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Program bestowed the honor for meeting the highest standards for testing lab samples. • More than 100 Alabama Power employees from several departments, the Alabama Power Service Organization and Energizers volunteered for the annual "Just Gone Fishin', Not Wishin'" three- day event at Oak Mountain State Park. About 1,200 Jefferson and Shelby county special-needs schoolchildren fished, played games and ate lunch. • Plant Greene County celebrated the 50th anniversary of the first unit beginning commercial operation on June 11, 1965, generating 250 megawatts, or enough to serve 150,000 to 200,000 homes in west Alabama following three years of construction. JULY • The Southeastern Electric Exchange honored Alabama Power employees with a trio of 2015 Industry Excellence Awards, the most of any of the more than 60 member utilities. The winning projects were "Alabama Power Integrated Distribution Management System," "Alabama Power Engineering Checklist" and "P.O.W.E.R. (Powering Our Work with Electronic Resources)." • The Alabama Power Foundation awarded $2,500 scholarships to 21 students to attend college, trade or technical schools. The dependent children of active, retired or deceased Alabama Power employees were selected based on academic achievement and other factors by an independent organization. Since 1991, the foundation has awarded more than $4 million in scholarships to help about 1,000 students. • Employees of Alabama Power's Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning Training Center in Verbena celebrated 30 years without a recordable injury or preventable vehicle accident. About 36,000 people hailing from 45 states and several foreign nations have been trained at the center. 4 YEAR IN REVIEW Alabama Power volunteers helped build Habtat for Humanity home. Employees taught children to fish at Oak Mountain State Park.
